Bhopal Gas Tragedy...

The recent conviction and sentencing of the guilty executives of the ghoulish Union Carbide company is a slap on the face of a burgeoning democracy, like India. It is an assault on the very tenets of Justice & law enforcement and also on the state’s will to take the case to its logical conclusion.

When thousands of people were killed and maimed, the state was busy in scuttling the process under the carpet and helping the high and mighty go scot-free.
And when the high and mighty was an American, the cover up process got a fillip under the supervision of the then CM, Arjun Singh. The love affair between Congress party and western figures is nothing new as the Quattrochi episode speaks volumes of it.

UC fiasco was not only the worst possible industrial disaster in the world but also the most delayed trial coupled with horrible disaster management and rehabilitation.

When more money could have been sought from the parent company in US through lawsuits and fair trials, an out of court settlement was reached between Rajiv Gandhi and UC in 1989.Only 13% of the desired compensation amount was given by UC to the govt of India, under the stewardship of Rajiv Gandhi and his cronies.

Such is the apathy of the govt that the Supreme Court was moved to disburse the compensation amount to its benefactors. And till date, it is alleged that not everyone has been compensated.

We live in a country where poor people are treated like insects and there is no value for human life, irrespective of caste or religion. Ironically, the political party which appeases the minority Muslims were the ones who were killed the most. Yet the heights of complacency by the Congress party in handling the entire situation is best seen through the eyes of the living victims.

The govt & CBI went into an overdrive to expunge the name of Anderson, the prime offender charged with culpable homicide, lest it may cast a shadow on the nuclear liability bill. While the current law minister has said that Anderson can be tried in Indian courts, someone needs to remind him that the US court has already rejected extradition requests from the govt of India earlier. The govt lacks political will to seek Anderson’s extradition due to its vested interests.

Anderson’s name is not present in the main list of offenders as he is termed as absconding in the matter by US as well as India. However, even a journalist could track him down, living in a beautiful mansion in US, enjoying his expensive golf matches and dinner luncheons.

While toxic Methyl Isocyanate was the reason for thousands of deaths and deformities that affected future generations after 1984 in the Bhopal gas tragedy, the attitude of the govt and Congress will be penned down under the headings of “what not to do” in the books of Disaster management and Effective governance.

Sorry Joel Stein

The 500 words of wisdom penned by Joel Stein in Time, forced me out of hibernation. While there was a huge uproar from America to India, some pundits exercised restraint and lectured people on the limitations of a humourless society. Oh yes, humour and its many forms. Though one should have an appetite for humour, it should not be humongous enough to tolerate blasphemy. And above all, the author or the magazine did not apologise and stood firm with its agenda of spreading humour by taking potshots at Hindus in particular & Indians in general. Imagine if Joel Stein had made even a passing reference to Islam or Muhammad. He would have been enjoying the perks of a five star security cordon by now and the magazine would have promptly hosted dinners for Muslim delegations to understand the nuances of Islam, along with a huge apology. Mullahs would have thronged the streets demanding justice, vowing to dislodge the powers that be. But Joel Stein wrote about Hindus. He is indeed very smar...

Ntrance Diaries : 1...Training Days

“So what do you want to opt for, Truth or Dare?” Dustin’s voice echoed across the bay and everyone was taken aback. Dustin was the Quality Assurance Leader (QAL) who had been given the responsibility to train new joinees for a 100% voice based process named Helpline. Dustin was a self-obsessed individual who had no qualms in offending anyone. His consistent practice to engage people in embarrassing discussions was the talk of the town. He took utmost pride in being disliked but little did he know that people despised him because of his I-know-it-all-attitude. He had excellent communication skills and he knew very well how to capitalise on that. He was good at his work so his inner eccentrities were ignored by others, but as he would know later, not for long. Nine faces beamed at him, ready with an answer. Nine mere mortals were being trained to go live and take calls from customers based in UK. They felt proud after being selected in the first voice process of XNS Xtrance, a leade...

Norway : Child Welfare or State Overreach.

It is absolutely shocking to know that two Indian kids have been snatched away from their parents by the Norwegian Child Protection Services or CPS. The reasons cited by CPS based at Stavanger in Norway, are that the parents were negligent in raising their kids due to which the kids had no emotional contact with their parents. The elder son was 2 & ½ years old & the younger daughter barely 5 months when they were sent to different foster homes on 11th of May last year. It is further said that since the kids used to sleep with their parents & were fed without cutlery, they were not properly taken care of. CPS has decided to let the kids remain under Foster care till they are 18 years of age. Just how sensible these observations are? The geoscientist father Anurup & the mother Sagarika are shattered by such high-handedness of CPS. They are living in Norway since 2007, & they argue that the Norwegian rules for child protection do not take into account the different r...
