I was always fascinated by machines when I was in school. Our school had also provided a workshop ,which had a plethora of machines ranging from Lathe machine, Drilling machine, Grinder and other heavy machines.
The aroma of the room was so overwhelming that we were forced to believe that we were working as mechanics the moment we entered there. The dark room with machines lying everywhere. It would have won the best prize for the filthiest hall in the school, even worse than the bathroom of the school.
The in-charge of that room was Mr Mukherjee. An unforgettable person because of his achievements that he boasted off almost anywhere you meet him. He was instrumental in designing the radar of Agni-III which was fired from Balasore. He was also a karate and judo champion and had even defeated the national champion.
Pretty good and off-track credentials for a workshop instructor huh..
Yet he was working as a workshop instructor for the benefit of the school. His walk was even more noticeable than Shahrukh Khan. He was a man who had been there and done it all. Yet he was serving the school so that we grow up knowing how to operate machines and so that we could also learn how to design radars.
S K Samantaray had learnt to imitate him a long back when we were in class sixth.
We enjoyed a lot when Samantaray’s mimicry was the centre of all performances in the House Dramatic competitions in Yamuna House.
Mr Mukherjee took great pride in his voice. It was very husky and he use to flaunt it to overshadow his short height. He was also a gym instructor though I had not seen a single gym in Orissa then but who could question the very authentic Mr Mukherjee. After all Agni-III missile’s radar was his brainchild.
Mr Mukherjee’s achievements grew from strength to strength within 7 years of our stint in the school from class VIth to XIIth. We were nurtured and motivated by him and within that time he wanted to be the master of all the activities in SSB. He taught us how to tackle thieves and thugs by showing us his judo prowess. Sometimes he tried to venture into academics to impress us but thankfully, he had understood that it was not his cup of tea.
Mr Mukherjee fell in Love with our Oriya teacher and their courtship was talk of the school. He was very proud to have mastered one more quality that is required from a man, to persuade a woman to marry him. That was quite surprising.
Jahan do ghar barbaad hote, wahan Ek hi huaa....
He must have known how to create nuclear missiles by now, keeping in mind his in-depth knowledge of sophisticated radars.
I can visualise him keeping a nuclear warhead in his workshop so that the students of India will gain hands on experience on creating such missiles...God Save SSB....

Cool man! There are you few things that exist for the eternity. Great language, great narrating skills, and great memory .. you personify all of it.
